Traditionally, hearing aids are made using a hard plastic case that is molded to fit the ear. When placed in the ear of the user, these plastic molds often create a discomfort called the occlusion effect. A person who experiences the occlusion effect will describe the following symptoms:

  • Their voice sounds hollow, like they’re talking in a barrel.

  • Their ears or head feel plugged up.

  • The crunching sounds made when eating are magnified by the hearing aid.
